Our Hunting Area

Explore and Hunt Northern British Columbia
with Golden Bear Outfitting

Hunting with Golden Bear Outfitting.

Golden Bear outfitting operates in Northwestern British Columbia in the Telegraph Creek – Stikine River area. The guide area is a vast territory encompassing over 8,000 square miles.

The guide area is the oldest established in Northern British Columbia and has long been a favorite with sportsman. The area was first hunted in 1884 by F.C. Galbreath, a pioneer outfitter, and was later sold to George Ball who operated it under ‘Northwest Ranching and Outfitting’ for over thirty years. Much of the area remains unchanged, as it has been spared heavy commercial and residential pressure.

The area has a diverse game population: stone sheep, grizzly bear, mountain goat, mountain caribou, moose, black bear and wolf. Several species of grouse and ptarmigan also live in the area and the lakes, rivers and streams boast incredible fishing opportunities.

We also have excellent fishing in our many lakes and rivers. If you finish your hunt early, you are welcome to fish as much as you’d like. We have some rods/reels in camp, but you may wish to bring your own, especially if you are a serious fisherman.

Fly, spin and casting methods all work well. The most common fish in our area include Lake Trout, Bull Trout, Rainbow Trout. We also have several rivers and creeks with major Salmon Runs coming in. Chinook, Sockeye and Coho all run into our area. We ask that you keep just enough fish to eat in camp and release the others. Fishing licenses must be purchased ahead of time.

Level Mountain

Level Mountain is a geological wonder in itself. Set in between the Cassiar and Coastal ranges, Level Mountain is a large plateau that runs 75 to 80 miles in length and 25 to 35 mile in width.

Although it is slightly over 6,000 feet at its highest peaks, Level Mountain is mostly elevated between timberline (4,800 and 5,400 feet). Its rolling terrain is composed of small lakes, stunted balsam trees and valleys filled with moose willows.

The latest game count showed approximately 2,000 Canada moose and 1,800 Mountain caribou roam the open plains and slopes of this vast expanse. Grizzly bear, Black bear, and wolf are also found through out the area, with Stone sheep and Rocky Mountain goat found on the highest peaks and fringe bluff.

Coastal Mountains

The main hunting area for Stone sheep and Rocky Mountain goat are on the interior or east side of the great Coast Range. With and elevation of up to 7,000 feet, these mountains are rugged, snow capped and wild.

This area is located on the head waters of the Tahltan and Shesley Rivers, tributaries of the Stikine and Taku respectively. Both are salmon run rivers supporting a high population of Grizzly and Black bears. Trophy moose can be found through out the valleys and lake areas.

Stikine River

Pronounced “Stick-keen”, it is taken from the local native language meaning, “The flowing together of rivers like fingers connecting to a man’s hand”.

Once a vital link for Tahltan-Russian trade it later became a major freight route for the Hudson Bay Company to the Northern Interior of British Columbia. The Stikine reaches over 300 miles inland from Wrangell, Alaska.

There are 130 downriver miles to hunt with many tributaries to explore. The river journey is exciting and spectacular as the waters can vary from peaceful idyllic sections to fast and adventurous in a short distance. Canyons, high snow capped mountains and glaciers make for an unforgettable experience. In addition to the beautiful scenery this mighty river also provides abundant salmon, steelhead, Brown trout, Rainbow trout and Dolly Varden.

Aside from many untouched mountain goat areas, the Stikine provides excellent hunting for Trophy moose, grizzly and black bear.
